RĪGA STRADIŅŠ UNIVERSITY

EOES 2023 was hosted by Rīga Stradiņš University, where the competitors had access to the brand new laboratories of the Pharmacy Studies and Science Complex for their assignments.

As previous year it was a joyful reunion for many of the supervisors and an unforgettable event for the youngsters from 22 European Union countries and one guest team from Ukraine.

Once again, the organisers succeeded in linking some wonderful experiments to two original themes:
'Smart Cumcumber' and 'Song and Dance through the Eyes of Science'.

To give you an idea of what the students were confronted with, here is a summary of the tasks they had to work through:
Stacks Image 1417
Singing and dancing is an important part of Latvian culture. Dancing requires muscles.

In
Task 1 students investigated how red and white muscles get energy from nutrients through biochemical processes. These processes also require oxygen. The students investigated which muscles contain the most oxygen transport proteins.

They also determined the energy content of three common snacks by literally burning them and measuring how much heat this produces.

When singing, we use the vocal cord. The sound of the voice was examined using audiograms and mimicked with a duck decoy whistle. The shape of mouth and throat cavity for pronouncing different vowels was recreated with a plastic tube and insulation material that served as a sound box.

Cucumbers can be grown efficiently on hydroponics. This involves hanging the roots of cucumber plants in water containing nutrients.

In Task 2 the students made the optimal nutrient mixture themselves, taking into account the lime content of the groundwater used. They determined the lime content by titration.

The cucumber plants themselves were also examined. Using a microscope, they looked at a plant leaf and a cross-section of a stem. By adding dyes, they made the wood and bark vessels in the stem clearly visible.

Finally they calculated how a plant transports water with nutrients upwards - against gravity - through the wood vessels.
Kudos to the organizing board and the scientific committee for these challenging tasks and the enormous amount of work they put in.

We all agree this was a successful olympiad!

And last, but not least, don't forget to take a look at our dedicated Media page, where you can find numerous photos and a video of the Olympiad week.
